SAFARI PACKING GUIDE
What to Pack for an African Safari
Expert packing advice, luggage restrictions, essential gorilla trekking gear, and safari clothing guidelines for East Africa.
⚠️ Essential Luggage & Soft Bag Guidelines
Soft-Sided Duffel Bags Only (15kg / 33lbs)
Hard suitcases do not fit into the custom luggage bays of safari 4x4 Land Cruisers. Please use durable soft duffel or barrel bags.
Internal Flight Baggage Strict Limits
Bush flights (Aerolink, Coastal Aviation) strictly enforce a 15kg (33lbs) total baggage limit including hand luggage in soft-sided bags.
Complimentary Lodge Laundry Services
Most luxury tented camps and lodges offer daily complimentary or modest-fee laundry, allowing you to pack light and travel easy.
Gorilla & Primate Trekking Essentials
Sturdy Waterproof Hiking Boots
Well-broken-in with solid ankle support and deep tread for steep, muddy rainforest terrain.
Heavy-Duty Gardening Gloves
Crucial for grabbing branches, thorny vines, and stinging nettles while ascending steep jungle slopes.
Long Trousers & Long-Sleeved Shirts
Lightweight quick-dry fabric. Tuck trousers into socks to protect against stinging safari ants.
Lightweight Rain Jacket or Poncho
Bwindi is a tropical montane rainforest; downpours can occur abruptly any time of year.
Gaiters (Optional but Recommended)
Keeps mud, water, and debris out of your boots and protects lower legs.
Day Pack with Waterproof Cover
Compact 20–30L backpack to carry your lunch, 2L water, camera gear, and rain gear.
Safari Bushwear & Color Guidelines
Neutral Safari Colors (Khaki, Olive, Tan)
Blends into the savannah and bush without distracting wildlife.
❌ Avoid Dark Blue & Solid Black
Attracts tsetse flies in wooded savannah areas like Murchison Falls and Tarangire.
❌ Avoid Bright White & Fluorescents
Easily spots dirt and stands out sharply against natural bush foliage.
Warm Fleece or Down Jacket
Evenings in Bwindi (2,000m+) and Ngorongoro rim get surprisingly chilly (10°C–14°C).
Wide-Brimmed Sun Hat & Sunglasses
Essential protection against equatorial sun during open-roof game drives.
Casual Lodge Wear
Smart casual trousers, linen shirts, or comfortable dresses for fireside dinners.
Camera & Optics Equipment
Binoculars (8x42 or 10x42)
Indispensable for spotting leopards in trees, distant cheetahs, and over 1,000 bird species.
Savannah Zoom Lens (70–300mm or 100–400mm)
Ideal focal length for capturing wildlife from the pop-up roof 4x4 cruiser.
Gorilla Lens (24–70mm or Fixed 50mm f/1.8)
Low-light fast apertures excel under the dense, dark rainforest canopy.
Multiple Spare Batteries & Memory Cards
Remote lodges rely on solar power, and cold mountain air drains camera batteries quickly.
Lens Cleaning Kit & Dustproof Bags
Dust is common on dry savannah game drives; protect your sensor and lenses.
Health, Toiletries & Medical
Yellow Fever Vaccination Card (ICVP)
Strictly mandatory for entry into Uganda and East African borders.
Malaria Prophylaxis (Malarone / Doxycycline)
Consult your travel doctor before travel; Uganda is a malaria-endemic country.
High-Strength Insect Repellent (30%+ DEET)
Apply during evening sundowners and jungle walks to prevent mosquito and fly bites.
Personal First Aid & Rehydration Salts
Include blister plasters, Imodium, antihistamines, painkillers, and sanitizing wipes.
Reef-Safe Sunscreen & Lip Balm with SPF
Equatorial UV rays are intense even through overcast cloud cover.
Electricity & Device Charging on Safari
Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania predominantly use the British Standard Type G 3-pin plug (240V). Rwanda uses the European 2-pin Type C/J plug. We recommend packing a universal adapter with built-in surge protection.
Most remote safari lodges operate on sophisticated solar power banks. Charging is available in guest cottages or centralized main lodge charging stations. Furthermore, all Valverde Safaris 4x4 Land Cruisers are equipped with power inverters so you can charge camera batteries and phones on the move.
🔌 Plug Types at a Glance
- Uganda: 240V, 50Hz • Type G (UK 3-pin square)
- Kenya: 240V, 50Hz • Type G (UK 3-pin square)
- Tanzania: 230V, 50Hz • Type D & G
- Rwanda: 230V, 50Hz • Type C & J (Euro 2-pin round)
💡 Tip: Centralized charging stations are common at eco-lodges. Label your chargers and batteries with your room number.
